Grouting and Regrouting

Why we cut the old grout out

Grout fails long before tiles do. When water is getting through the joints, cutting the old grout out and replacing it costs a fraction of a rebuild and takes days rather than weeks.

  • Old grout mechanically removed, not skimmed over
  • Standard or epoxy grout to suit the room
  • Internal corners siliconed rather than grouted
  • Usually one to two days for a shower
  • Honest advice when a regrout will not be enough

The shortcut in this trade is to smear fresh grout over the top of the old joints. It looks good for a few months, then the new layer breaks up because it was never thick enough to bond, and the water carries on getting through underneath.

We cut back to the full depth of the joint with a grout removal tool, vacuum the dust out, and regrout properly. It takes longer and it is the only version that lasts.

While we are in there we check the floor waste and the internal corners, because a perfect regrout will still leak if the silicone around the waste has failed.
