Caulking and Silicone

Why silicone goes black

Silicone is a wearing part. It is meant to be replaced every few years, and when it splits or lifts it lets water straight past the tiles and into the wall.

  • Old sealant cut out completely, not covered over
  • Mould treated in the joint before resealing
  • Mould resistant sealant used throughout
  • Showers, baths, vanities, splashbacks and laundries
  • Colour matched to the existing grout

Mould grows in the moisture trapped behind the bead, not on the surface of it. That is why scrubbing the outside never fixes it for long and why running a new bead over an old one brings the problem straight back.

We remove the old sealant completely, clean and treat the joint underneath, let it dry, then run a fresh bead of mould resistant sealant and tool it off to a clean line.

Silicone is a wearing part. Expect to have it redone every few years in a shower that gets daily use, and far less often around a vanity or splashback.
